New treatment may help people with lung disease

Deborah Heart and Lung Center, in conjunction with nearly 40 medical researchers across the United States, is participating in the endobronchial valve for emphysema palliation trial (VENT), a clinical study evaluating a new bronchoscopic approach for individuals with emphysema. This new medical technology—the Emphasys endobronchial valve (EBV)—has shown promise as a minimally invasive therapy for improving lung function and quality of life.

Emphysema is a degenerative, irreversible disease that afflicts more than three million Americans. Although it can be genetic, it is more commonly caused by years of smoking.
